Popular butchers facing the chop

| Twickenham MP Vincent Cable joins traders and a shopper |
A Twickenham greengrocer and a butcher are trading on borrowed time after being given a week's notice to vacate their premises a week-and-a-half ago.
The landlord, who they describe as "faceless" could turn up for the keys for their King Street premises at any minute and Twickenham MP Dr Vincent Cable has joined their fight to save their shops.
He has asked people frustrated over small business struggling with these anonymous landlords to write to him.
He added: "I want to get these landlords together to meet residents and hear what people really want."
Owners of Wishbone butchers and Cousins greengrocers said they were delighted with the well-wishes they have received from hundreds of shoppers.
They urged people to support them by choosing small traders over supermarkets.

I am always frustrated by articles such as this. The landlords'(faceless or otherwise)cannot serve notice to quit 'out of the blue', unless the lease or agreement, signed by the tenants' permits it or it is coming to an end. The tenants' must have known the provisions in their lease and or that it was about to expire. I would also like to know if their lease is outside the security of tenure provisions of the 1954 Landlord & Tenant Act? Did their landlord serve the correct notices? Did they at any point consult a suitably qualified property professional?
The law in this country is very clear as to a tenants rights, but it can't help those who either don't or won't take proper advice and the necessery steps to protect their position!

It's terribly terribly sad. But what kind of business are you running when your lease can be cancelled within a week? Hopefully both stores can relocate elsewhere in Twix as they are an important part of the high stret shopping experience here

I am absolutely appalled and horrified that something like this can happen. Who are these faceless landlords? Cousins and Wishbone are two local shops selling fresh local produce and offering a real service will real people who know their trade. How can landlords be allowed to do this? The last thing Twickenham needs is greedy landlords selling to the highest bidder and giving us yet another coffee shop, or perhaps a Tesco metro - that is [bold]NOT[/bold] what Twickenham wants or needs. We need these local traders who offer a fantastic service and form part of the local community - not just yet another faceless franchise. Can't the council step in to save the heart of the community and stop Twickenham just becoming yet another faceless anonymous franchised high street? Keep Twickenham local!!!! We will be giving both shops our full support in fighting off these tyrants who are not only intent on ruining the shopkeepers lives and livelihood, but also ripping the heart out of the community. A weeks notice, no face to face contact, and anonymous. These landlords are cowards as well as bullies and everyone must do everything in their power to stop this kind of behaviour from infiltrating our soceity.

bold]Central Control not Local Control.[/bold]
This is the real problem, local people, councils have no rights when it comes to specifing to what use a retail space is put. I know that our Local MP Vince Cable is pushing for [bold]local people[/bold] to have the power to 'recall' planning decisions - a right given to developers but [italic]not[/italic] to local people at present.
Yes, we need the small independent retailer because they provide local employment and services to our local community and in most cases a place for us all to meet as a community. Let's support our local community by supporting our local retailers and businesses.
Let's break the central focus of both the major parties Labour and Tory and bring power back to local people.

I aggree with Nikky and Tommy. We must not allow the closure of Cousions and Wishbone they are the heart of Twickenham. What next Sandys fish shop?

It’s very wrong these small businesses being forced out. What these people have to pay to these greedy landlords is high enough without being treated in this fashion. We have so many different shops that come and go and it’s usually the small traders that suffer the most.
Twickenham already has enough coffee shops enough Supermarkets, and needs its local traders, to give people that choice
We must make a stand. If not we will end up with a soulless town centre
