Macca pays tribute to his friend the fifth Beatle
 |
| Neil Aspinall |
The world of music has paid tribute to The Beatles' friend and business brain, Neil Aspinall who lived in Twickenham for 40 years and died on Sunday.
Neil, 66, had lived in Waldegrave Park since 1968, the year he married his wife Suzy who he met on the set of The Beatles film A Hard Day's Night, and when he began managing the Beatles' company Apple Corps Ltd.
Former Beatle, Sir Paul McCartney in a statement said that "Neil was our mate for a long, long time and nobody could replace him because he was so special. He's a great guy."
He added: "I met him at school when we were both 11 and we remained friends ever since.
"I was able to say goodbye and thank him for everything he did for us and I send my deepest sympathies to his wonderful family.
"I will miss him but will remember the laughs, there were plenty."
Beatle widows Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison also put their name to the statement, saying: "As a loyal friend, confidant and chief executive, Neil's trusting stewardship and guidance has left a legacy for generations to come."
Janet Goldie, 83, and her husband Hugh, 88, live opposite the Aspinall's and remember Neil fondly. Mrs Goldie ran a nursery at her home where she looked after Neil and Suzy's two youngest daughters in the late seventies.
She said: "Neil was a very nice man - totally self-effacing. A wonderful family man. He never wanted to show off about his connections. You can only say the nicest things about him."
He died in a New York hospital with his family at his bedside on Sunday, two months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He leaves his wife and five children.
