More than 350 beavers, cubs and scouts raced around the borough's streets last weekend to help raise awareness of the scouting movement's centenary.

Richmond district scouts held the Richmond upon Thames Run last Saturday, January 20, and members aged 6 to 18 set about getting to as many of the borough's 24 scouting headquarters as possible.

Graeme Wood, from Richmond district explorer scouts, said between 350 and 400 beavers, cubs, scouts and parents took part and everyone had a good day.

Everyone that took part had six hours to get around as many of the 24 HQs as they could and take part in an activity at each base. Younger sections travelled with parents while the older ones were encouraged to use public transport, bikes, or even run around the entire district covering around 30 miles in the process.

The start of the race was signalled by the release of 100 balloons from outside the base at Old Deer Park car park and everyone set off.

Mr Wood said: "We had quite a few that got all the way round, some older ones on bikes cycled the entire route while some did the entire route in cars with their parents. Quite a few on public transport managed to get to 16, 17 or 18 headquarters.

"It went really, really well and was a fun thing to help launch the centenary of scouting.

"We want to get scouting back in the public eye, so the public can see we are a strong force, we have 1,500 youth members in the district."
