Campaigners want the deer to be given contraceptives to keep their numbers down instead of being shot.

Hundreds of deer have been killed in Richmond and Bushy parks in the past few years.

Organiser Lesley Dove said: “Many locals living close to the parks have heard the crying of dying and distressed deer during the culls and this is clearly not humane, whatever the parks authorities claim.”

But in previous years the Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales, along with the Friends of Richmond Park, have supported the cull.

Miss Dove, who lives in Rectory Grove, Hampton, said about 40 protesters were expecting to march from Kingston bridge to the Kingston Gate of Richmond Park on Saturday, November 5, waving placards, leaflets and petitions.

Previous statements issued by Richmond Park manager Simon Richard said the yearly cull was necessary to maintain numbers at a specific level to avoid problems of disease and damage to the natural environment.

He said: “The British Deer Society and the Deer Initiative of England and Wales recognise parkland deer numbers must be managed and that removal of some of the deer is necessary each year to keep populations at acceptable levels.... [and] fully endorse the humane shooting of deer as the optimum method of deer control in the royal parks.”

I find this procedure very distressing travelling through the Park twice a day you get to recognise some of the stags in particular. If there are too many can they not be moved to another Park. These days the deer look so very healthy so the theory that it is just the old and infirm I do not believe. I hope that Public Opinion is listened too and the Queen will just have to go without her Venison.

I feel the cull is the most humane way to manage wild deer in the park it's tried and tested and they've had a much better life than the majority of animals that are served up on a plate,it's the way of the countryside and I think people from towns don't always understand to keep the herd healthy there has to be some losses

The cull has gone on for years, it is necessary and should continue.

Perhaps the protesters could do something more useful with their Saturday like looking in on an elderly or lonely neighbour.

To the very patronising Teddington resident, it’s easy to criticise others from the comfort of your desk or armchair. At least we animal lovers are getting off our backsides and speaking up for what we believe in, whether you like it or not – that’s what we do in a democracy. Slavery and child labour went on for years too, but that doesn’t mean they should continue. By the way, when was the last time you marched for something you believe in – or popped into an elderly neighbour for that matter? Why don’t you come along on Saturday and make YOUR opinion heard? Actions speak louder than words.

I live opposite Home Park, and have sometimes been woken in the early hours by gunshot - difficult to sleep after that, imagining the scene. I have watched the marksmen dazzle the deer in their headlights and take aim, on another occasion viewed them hauling a slaughtered deer into their vehicle. All this to add to the £29K made from the sale of the venison! There must be an alternative to the deer cull - contraception, relocation? Why not leave the deer to their own devices for a couple of years, to see how the herd fares, and have an independent review conducted thereafter? Thank you to everyone in Kingston who supported the protest yesterday.
