Multimillion pound improvements to Twickenham town centre have reached an important milestone a year after work commenced.

Richmond Council thanked people for their patience after London Road was closed at the junction with King Street and York Street, causing traffic congestion in the town centre.

The works at the junction, part of the Twickenham Rediscovered project, were completed this week and road closures lifted.

The council said this part of the work was an "important landmark in the project" and will help ease traffic congestion and improve the environment for pedestrians.

Councillor Stephen Speak, cabinet member for highways, said: "Twickenham Rediscovered is really coming together and the town centre will be a much better place to visit, shop and work.

"The patience and understanding of our residents has been outstanding.

"We ask for their continued forbearance as we progress to the next stages of the work in London Road, King Street and York Street."

The next stage of the works include improvements of pavements and installation of cycle lanes in London Road, new seating in King Street, a new crossing in King Street by the George pub and improvements to roads and pavements in Church Street.

The project is due for completion in summer 2015, ahead of the Rugby World Cup in the autumn.
