Police are continuing to investigate after a cash point outside a newsagent was “blown up” by thieves this morning.

Part of Kew village was cordoned off as commuters made their way to Kew Gardens station while police and forensics officers examined the scene.

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

It is believed thieves targeted the cash point at Martin’s newsagents, Station Parade, at about 4.30am.

A Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) spokesman said they were called at 4.40am today to reports of a burglary.

The spokesman said on arrival, police found the shop had been entered and the cash point had been forced open.

No arrests have been made and no details of property of cash stolen were available, but officers from the MPS flying squad are investigating.

Ben Murney, master butcher at Pether Fine Meat and Poultry in Station Parade, said there was money scattered across the floor when he arrived to work at 6am.

He said: "It was all cordoned off and police were making people go around it.

"Some residents have said there was a really loud explosion and it shook the whole building.

"The police have been here since it happened and the cordon has now been taken in [at 11.20 am] and they [police] in blue suits are going through the money on their hands and knees."

Richmond and Twickenham Times:

He also said that a man was arrested for going through the cordoned area at 9am.

Daniel Slack, owner of Kew Gardener, said: "I came to drive to work and the whole village was cordoned off.

"I walked in to the village and they have blown the cash machine out the wall. There was stuff in the street half way across the road and the forensics people were all over it.

"The inside of the shop has been blown out as well like a small bomb went off.

"It is a little bit disconcerting. Our shop was broken into a few nights earlier and I wonder whether it was a precursor to this one."

Staff at Martin’s said they were waiting for the damaged windows to be boarded up and wanted to “get on as normal”.
